(Isaiah 53:2-5)
2For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a
root out of dry ground;
he had no form or majesty that we should look at him,
nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.
3 He was despised and rejected by others;
a man of suffering and acquainted with infirmity;
and as one from whom others hide their faces
he was despised, and we held him of no account.
4 Surely he has borne our infirmities and carried our
diseases;
yet we accounted him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted.
5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, crushed
for our iniquities;
upon him was the punishment that made us whole, and by his bruises
we are healed.
(John 13:21-30)
21After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and
testified, "I tell you the truth, one of you
is going to betray me."
22His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to
know which of them he meant. 23One of them, the
disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him. 24Simon
Peter motioned to this disciple and said, "Ask him which one he
means."
25Leaning
back against Jesus, he asked him, "Lord, who is it?"
26Jesus answered, "It is the one
to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in
the dish." Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to
Judas Iscariot, son of Simon. 27As soon as Judas took
the bread, Satan entered into him.
"What you are about to do, do quickly,"
Jesus told him, 28but no one at the meal understood why
Jesus said this to him. 29Since Judas had charge of the
money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed
for the Feast, or to give something to the poor. 30As
soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.
(Matt.
26:31-34)
31Then Jesus told them, "This very
night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written:
"'I will strike
the shepherd,
and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.'
32But
after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee."
33Peter replied, "Even if all fall away on account of
you, I never will."
34"I
tell you the truth," Jesus answered,
"this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me
three times."
(John
14:2-6)
2"In my Father's house are many rooms;
if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to
prepare a place for you. 3And if I go and prepare a
place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that
you also may be where I am. 4You know the way to the
place where I am going."
5Thomas said to him, "Lord, we don't know where you are
going, so how can we know the way?"
6Jesus answered, "I am the way
and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except
through me."
(Mark
14:44-50)
44Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: "The one
I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard."
45Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, "Rabbi!" and kissed
him. 46The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47Then
one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant
of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
48"Am I leading a rebellion,"
said Jesus, "that you have come out with
swords and clubs to capture me? 49Every day I was with
you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But
the Scriptures must be fulfilled." 50Then
everyone deserted him and fled.
(Ephesians
4:3-6)
3Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through
the bond of peace. 4There is one body and one
Spirit--just as you were called to one hope when you were called--5one
Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6one God and Father of
all, who is over all and through all and in all.
(John
3:19)
19"And this is the judgment, that the
light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather
than light...."
(Luke 23:26-28, 32-34, 44-46)
26As they led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who
was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and
made him carry it behind Jesus. 27A large number of
people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for
him. 28Jesus turned and said to them,
"Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me;
weep for yourselves and for your children. . . ."
32Two others also, who were criminals, were led away to be
put to death with him. 33When they came to the place
that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the
criminals, one on his right and one on his left. 34Then
Jesus said, "Father, forgive them; for they
do not know what they do."
. . . . 44It was now
about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole land until
the ninth hour, 45for the sun stopped shining. And the
curtain of the temple was torn in two. 46Jesus called
out with a loud voice, "Father, into your
hands I commit my spirit." When he had said this, he
breathed his last.
